Pringles Recall

Pringles: P&G has been asked by FDA to recall two of its flavors.

Pringles is the latest item to join the foods which has been recommended by FDA to be recalled.

According to the details, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of U.S. has recommended Procter & Gamble to recall two flavors of Pringles potato chips. P&G has been asked to recall two flavors of Pringles due to the use of a vegetable protein.

The hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) is produced by Basic Food Flavors Inc. which issued a recall a week ago as it found Salmonella in its production equipment and feared that it got into the products too.

Pringles is one of the many other food products which uses HVP made by the Las Vegas-based company Basic Food Flavors. Due to the alert issued by Basic Food Flavors, thousands of food items will be affected. This contamination has affected several Canadian food products too where a recall of two dozen food items have been issued.

HVP is used to enhance the flavor in food items like hot dogs, seasoned snacks, stews, chilis, sauces, dips, and dressings. Salmonella can cause fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Apparently, FDA discovered the presence of Salmonella during a trip to Basic Food Flavors.

After investigating its equipment FDA found the presence of this dangerous substance in HVP products. FDA has recommended a recall of all the products produced after September 2009 in which HVP has been used.

Due to the potential of Salmonella presence, two flavors of Pringles have been recalled by P&G Co. Reportedly, the cheeseburger and Taco night flavors of Pringles have been recalled. Consumers who have bought these flavors of Pringles will be offered coupons for refunds. P&G says that the two flavors only represent 0.5% of total Pringles volume in U.S. and that the recalled flavors were sold in U.S. only. P&G says it has not received any report of illness linked to Pringles.
