It is universally acknowledged epithet that History repeats itself, Thanks God, it does not repeat in the same sequence, otherwise (I have to tie the knot again, I hope this will go unnoticed from my superior rather SUPERIOR Half) it would have proved disastrous.
If you have witnessed the 70s era through its virtual presence then you would glad that not all legacies of seventies have turned back except wider ties and flare pants and of course the concept of Space Solar Power.
The idea of building vast space solar power satellites and then beaming their energy to earth is not a new idea and not of even seventies’ idea. People had been fascinated by the idea before seventies but it was seventh decade of the last century when this idea of space solar power got some grounds.
Though there were several factors that led to this idea, interwoven with each other from environment to oil crisis and most importantly government studies that were piled up by using huge available sources. To many it was answer to their cultural, ideological and even spiritual needs. Many others were raising alarms about the exhaustion of the earth’s energy resources that would end the world (ironically it entered in the next century exhausting more energy than was anticipated in seventies)
Few of the credit also go to satellite television that made it possible for masses around the world to see Gerard K. O’Neill working in the space and idea of operating the space solar power satellite was dusted out once again but next few decades did not see any progress of the idea and today history is repeating itself and the idea of Space Solar Power has come on table for brain storming but no one has yet made any investment to give it a concrete shape.
If by any chance you have witnessed SOLAR 2010, the annual conference of the American Solar Energy Society, you would have been taken aback by the fact that no presentation on Space Solar Power was made in the symposium.
For the time forget the Space Solar Power and try to enjoy this meaningless song;
Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun
But mama, that’s where, is the fun!
