Winthrop University Fail To Get Past Arkansas-Pine Bluff

The Winthrop University eagles had to return back to their nest as they were outplayed by the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions in the opening round game of this year’s men’s NCAA Division 1 Basketball Tournament.

Arkansas-Pine Buff beat Winthrop 61-44 after producing a late offensive gameplay led by Allen Smith in yesterday’s tournament opener at Dayton, Ohio. Smith scored 14 points in the game.

The Golden Lions have another road trip to look forward to as they will now face the top seed Duke team in the NCAA tournament while the fans who came over from the Winthrop University have to just head back home.

The current Winthrop University team is coached by Randy Peele and is one of the well-known sports team at

the Rock Hill campus. The men’s team has won the Big South Conference 10 times including the recent concluded installment of the Conference. The Winthrop Eagles have also qualified 9 times for the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament since 1999.

In 2007, the Winthrop Eagles basketball team was placed in the top 25 teams in the two most popular college basketball polls. AP ranked the Eagles at 24 while ESPN placed it 22 in its poll. In the same year the Eagles defeated Notre Dame for their first win the NCAA tournament.

In this year’s Big South Conference, Winthrop University beat Coastal Carolina University 64-53 in the final championship game to win the tournament for the 10th time thereby setting a new record for the Conference.
