Zulqarnain Haider

Sialkot, Pakistan — Pakistan police apprehended the gag sending death threats to Pakistan Cricket team wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider today on Wednesday April 27, 2011 from Sialkot.

Police apprehended all the bookmakers linked to threats against Zulqarnain Haider, who confessed to their crime as well.

The 25-year-old Wicketkeeper abandoned the Pakistan Cricket team in Dubai last year in November and fled to London, saying he had been receiving death threats from the bookmakers who wanted him to fix a match against South Africa.

Zulqarnain announced his retirement from cricket and applied for political asylum in the United Kingdom, but returned home on Monday April 25, 2011 after the Pakistani government gave assurance about his and his family’s safety.

Nasir Qureshi a police official told the media reporters “We have arrested eight bookies and some of them have revealed they were behind threats to Haider.”

“We have confiscated their data which has a number of international contacts and the investigation is still on.”

He said the official press conference could be called tomorrow on Thursday April 28, 2011.

Nasir Qureshi further added “We have found a number of satellite telephones and diaries which have international contacts and we hope to get further details in the next 24 hours.”

Last week after meeting Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik in London, Zulqarnain Haider announced that he is ready to revoke his asylum application and return to resume his career with Pakistan Cricket team.
