Matt Garza tossed Tampa Bay’s first no hitter on Monday against Detroit Tigers snatching a 5-0 victory and claiming to be the fifth of big leaguers to perform the feat on the mound.
But when did you last heart about five no-hitters? It was way back in 1991 when Nolan Ryan managed one of seven in the majors.
According to Mike Krukow, San Francisco Ginats broadcaster, the people interested in baseball are beginning to expect a no-hitter every week and it seemed 2010 is going to be the year of the pitcher.
According to Joe Maddon, Rays manager, the pitching has gotten better adding that he is not sure whether hitting has gone back a little or not but pitching has definitely improved.
The sports statistics related to baseball support his claim as during eight innings in this year a pitcher has carried a no-hitter for 14 times.
Of course the pitchers have shown their strength and it was in the recent past on May 9 when Oakland left hander Dallas Braden retired all batters against Tampa Bay and then Roy Halladay also showed his feat of the same caliber just 20 days later at Florida making it a pair of perfect games including one in 1880.
Before Matt Garza’s gem, Tampa Bay has been involved with three no-hitters in this season. Florida right handed Ricky Nolasco said that pitching is going to take over the game of baseball and that is good. It is the way it should be.
