Recent racist debates resurface the Tawana Brawley saga.

After the Shirley Sherrod controversy, it seems like the liberals and conservatives of the country are at media-war with each other once again. Different political and civil rights organizations are blaming each other and reminding each other of their dirty games.

This blame game has reminded us what we have long forgotten. And one of those ‘forgotten’ incidents is the Tawana Brawley saga. Reportedly, Al Sharpton, the advisor of Brawley, has started talking of pre-civil rights era once again. What an opportunist Al Sharpton is!

So what happened to Tawana Brawley? The story goes back to November 1987 when Brawley was found lying unresponsive in a garbage bag near a building where she had once lived. She was smeared with feces and her clothes were burned and ripped. A conscious but unresponsive Tawana Brawley was taken to emergency room of the hospital where several slurs were found written on her chest with charcoal.

Tawana Brawley was interviewed by a black officer and a case was built. Brawley alleged three white men of raping her and claimed that at least one of them was a police officer. She couldn’t provide any description of the three alleged rapists. Medical tests did not confirm any kind of sexual assault and no medical evidence was found in her which could indicate that she had spent several nights in a wooded area in such a low temperature. There were several differences in her statements and there was no evidence which could indicate that she was really raped.

Tawana Brawley received sympathy from the public initially and several civil rights activists supported her and raised funds for her. In December 1987, a crowd of more than thousand supporters of Tawana Brawley marched through the streets of Newburgh.

Among many staunch advocators of Tawana Brawley was Al Sharpton who criticized the mainstream media for their response towards the case and openly supported Brawley. The grand jury declared that Brawley’s allegations were wrong and she made it up to avoid punishment from her parents for leaving her home.

Surely Al Sharpton and his likes believed and advocated in a conspiracy theory against whites, and after the Shirley Sherrod case they’re in the field once again to promote their claims once again.
