Kevin Garn, the house majority leader, made a shocking confession on the final night of the 2010 session and admitted that he paid a woman $150,000 to keep her silent about his hot tub encounter with her when she was 15.
According to the details, on the final night of the 2010 Legislature session while addressing to a chamber full of fellow lawmakers and their spouses and interns, Kevin Garn made his address. In a soft tone, Kevin Garn admitted that 25 years ago he made a mistake which is now haunting him. He then recounted that almost two decades ago he ‘foolishly’ encountered a teenage girl in a hot tub. He said that his encounter was non-sexual. He then took complete responsibility of his inappropriate act. Continuing with his address, Kevin Garn said that the girl claimed that over the years the incident made a negative impact on her, and when he ran for the 2002 Congress elections she came to him and demanded $150,000 which he paid.
Kevin Garn also told the chamber that the woman has contacted several news reporters and is trying to revive the story effectively. Garn said that he didn’t want to live in fear and hence is now open about the incident. In his confession statement, Kevin Garn also told that his wife and family have been told about it years ago and that they have granted him forgiveness.
Kevin Garn then apologized publicly to the woman and later made an apology to his colleagues. When he finished the speech, Kevin Garn received an overwhelming support from fellow lawmakers.
The question remains that whether this confession would make any negative impact on the political career of the House leader? Probably not, as he wasn’t involved in a felony and moreover he came up clean and admitted his mistakes publicly. In fact, Kevin Garn showed that he is a man with integrity who is ashamed of his wrong act and took the complete responsibility of his acts.
