Huge sinkhole in Milwaukee swallows a SUV

In the pouring rain Mark Pawlik, 46, was walking through the North Avenue Bridge in Milwaukee when he noticed that a traffic light has sunk into the road. Pawlik stopped to take a picture of the sunken traffic light pole. Moments later a black Escalade appeared on the intersection of Oakland and North Ave. and then went down.

Pawlik describes the scene as if the ground suddenly swallowed the SUV. He leaned over the bridge and saw a 15×15 sinkhole. The driver of the SUV was frightened and kept on asking him what just happened to him.

The man then managed to get out of the sinkhole with Pawlik’s help. Few minutes later the police arrived at the scene with an ambulance. The sinkhole was surrounded by an emergency tape and the driver of the SUV was taken to hospital.

The sinkhole was made on Wednesday evening amid heavy rain which flooded many areas of Milwaukee with water up to eight inches in just one day. Police say that the sinkhole was 20 feet deep. Fortunately, the driver wasn’t seriously hurt.

The sinkhole wasn’t the only problem Milwaukee faced due to Wednesday’s heavy rain pour. The stormy weather forced the Milwaukee airport to cancel all the arriving and departure flights.

The rain flooded the streets and homes in Milwaukee. Two people were struck by lightning too. The National Weather Service has said that more rain is on its way to Milwaukee where flood warnings have already been issued.
