Genital Warts: Gardasil is the solution from Merck as Canada has approved the drug to treat genital warts for males from age 9 to 26.
Gardasil is introduced as a vaccine against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) as a treatment to cure genital warts caused by the infection. HPV is said to be one of the most frequent sexually transmitted disease in Canada and Health Canada has approved the vaccine for treatment of HPV type 6-11-16 and 18. HPV type 6, 11 caused genitals warts would also be treated by Gardasil.
Health Canada has previously approved Gardasil for treating cervical cancer along with genital warts suffered by females from the age of 9 to 26. In a campaign, provinces and territories all over Canada were offered school based programs to use Gardasil while it was said that drug worked well in females that were still not indulged in sexual activities.
In the beginning of this month, Glaxo Smith Kline announced that Health Canada has approved Cevarix, one of its vaccines to protect females against HPV 31-33-45. All three types were believed to be a cause of cancer strains in females.
Two weeks ago, GlaxoSmithKline announced that Health Canada has approved its HPV vaccine, Cervarix, in girls and women. Cervarix protects against three other cancer-causing strains, HPV 31, 33 and 45.
While most of the infected females with genital warts become cured of this infection at their own but few with weaker immunity system become vulnerable to cervical cancer if the infection persists.
According to the Journal of American Medical Association, Gardasil was found at par with other vaccines to provide safety to women against genital warts while another journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases has shown with respect to a study that 56% of the young people who indulge in sexual relationships were found infected with one or another type of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
The Canadian Government announced in March 2007 that it will provide a budget of $ 300 million over three years to the provinces and territories under a national HPV vaccination program for females.
It still lies with the territories and provinces to recommend Gardasil or some other vaccination for treatment of HPV. Each year almost 40000 new cases with genital wart infection in males and females are reported in Canada.
