Abbott Laboratories have issued a voluntarily recall for Similac, a powdered infant formula. The recall was made due to the possible contamination of common household beetle or its larvae.
Abbott Laboratories say the company received two consumer reports about the contamination upon which the company ordered an inspection of its manufacturing facilities. The company found presence of beetle in a Michigan-based manufacturing facility and immediately contacted FDA to issue a recall.
According to the spokesperson of Abbott Laboratories, the Similac product being recalled is sold in cans and that the recall affects the powdered formula only. Similac sold in the liquid form will not be affected by the recall. The spokesperson also said that the consumers put trust in Abbott Laboratories and the company cannot afford to hurt their trust in any case.
Abbott Laboratories says that FDA has determined that this type beetle does not pose any immediate medical threat but could cause discomfort in the intestines and make the infant lose his appetite. The consumers of the contaminated baby formula could experience the symptoms of GI tract infection.
Abbott Laboratories has also said that the company has already issued an investigation into the issue. FDA is also visiting the facility to ensure the manufacturing plant is now clean.
Abbott Laboratories has asked the consumers to visit the company’s website to check the products’ lot numbers to claim their money. Abbott Laboratories has also said that other manufacturing plants will step up the production of Similac to meet the requirements of consumers.
