Heightism is a type of discrimination which is based upon the height of a person. As far as the American society is concerned, the bias of heightism is pretty much obvious and persuasive. The heightism is not affected by other factors and considerations such as race, religion, belief, or wealth of a person.
Meaning thereby, any person who is short is the victim of this type of discrimination regardless of the fact what other strengths he has.
In America, any person below the height of 5 ft. 8 inches will be treated with prejudice and bias whatever other ‘credentials’ he has. This is the research of a sociologist from Cleveland, Saul Feldman.
The socialist is of the firm view that heightism is not less severe , though not much talked about, than any other loathsome forms of discriminations such as racism, gender discrimination and it is even more ‘deep-rooted’ in the American society.
Saul Feldman expressed his views about heightism when he was attending a recent meeting of the American Sociological Association and told that this type of discrimination is so much ‘mutually accepted’ that no body even talks about it except the person who is short.
As far as relationships are concerned, the height is still a vital parameter to have a positive or negative perception towards the man. A short man again has to face derogatory treatment form the opposite sex. A woman never idealizes a short man even if he has other physical strengths.
The Feldman’s point seems to stress not merely on the existence of heightism but its ‘pervasiveness’ and mutual acceptability as a ‘value’ in the American society. Even if a short man performs better than the taller ones, he is dubbed ‘Little Napoleon’. A similar prejudice is ‘Omni-present’ while having preference for a presidential candidate in the US.
