The Buckyball is a molecule having the shape of a soccer ball. Buckyballs was discovered 25 years back and Google is celebrating its birthday. Buckyballs is also known as fullerene and buckminsterfullerene.
Buckyballs is purely related to the chemical field and it is usually used in the world of nanotechnology. It is also used as wheel to manufacturing of certain nanomachines.
Today, the Google has selected to doodle one of the most sophisticated fullerene to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Buckyballs discovery.
Buckminsterfullerene or Fullerene was discovered 25 years ago and it has been considered as one of the most stable carbon after graphite and diamond. The name of Buckyballs or Buckminsterfullerene was given because they were discovered and used successfully by Richard Buckminster Fuller in the Geodesic Demo.
The Buckyballs were discovered in 1985 and it became one of the most popular chemical structures due to its versatility, uniformity and beautification for the synthesis of new compound.
The Buckyballas have different shapes like ellipsoids, spheres, cylinders but most of the time, spherical is called buckyballs.
In 2003, the studies revealed that buckyballs would be very effective in resisting bacteria and molecules such as melanoma cancer, if they would have been used medicinally by designing specific antibiotics structures. But the theory presented by American Chemical Society reveals that buckyballs is harmful to organisms.
Google has given a unique addition by replacing their O with a Buckyball on its 25th anniversary.
