Celiac Disease: A Disease of Small Intestine

Celiac disease is related to gluten. Gluten is a type of protein that is present in wheat, rye, and barley grains. This type of proteins is the vital part of everyday meals.

A greater majority of the people can take gluten without any complication or trouble. But there are such people as well who have problem in digesting gluten. The people who have problem with Gluten are said to have celiac disease.

Now a valid question comes to mind why this happens. For this we need to understand the digestive system of the body. When we have meal, the food enters the stomach. After passing through the stomach, the refined food enters the small intestine.

The small intestine has the lining of villi. Villi resemble fingers but they are microscopic and cannot be seen with a naked eye. The function of villi is to absorb vitamins and mineral into our body. If the person, who has celiac disease, eats gluten which is present in bread, he will at once experience a reaction from his immune system. In the ordinary course, the immune system protects the body from being damaged or catching a disease.

In celiac disease, the villi of the body become damaged due to which the absorption process does not take place and minerals do not become part of the body. So without these vital nutrients, minerals and vitamins, the kid’s growth is affected. He may suffer weight loss and anemia because necessary amounts of iron does not enter the blood stream.
