Why was booking Betty White on late night such a “happening” thing this year. I saw her on Leno and SNL and found her trying to be spunky modestly amusing, at best. Was booking Betty a requirement to be nominated among the academy? I respect her for being the last remaining “Golden Girl,” but it’s not fair to overlook the humor, creativity and actors succeeding in complicated roles from “True Blood,” “Hung” and “Weeds” over it. It’s no secret that SNL has struggled to hold the torches of Belushi, Akroyd, Carvey, Murphy, Meyers, and Ferrell; but to need Betty White to keep them alive…that’s an all-time low. Guess the academy can’t see passed the fangs. “True Blood” is more than just another teen vampire series. It’s about the good and evil in all of us and a metaphore for societies problems as a whole. It’s the movie, “Crash,” with fangs.
While I agree SNL hasn’t been good really ever (I mean have you gone through the old DVD’s and watched all the shows) in hundreds of hours of television there were only moments of hilarious genius and half of those moments were do to flubbing lines or missing a cue and winging it through. Betty White isn’t funny she’s just old and tries to be funny by saying things you wouldn’t expect from a 98 year old woman. She’s a good actress but not a great comedian. “True Blood” is just Dawson’s Creek with fangs.
